At WMF we love life transformations! The process of a person changing their entire life through their sheer will is the most inspiring thing for us, and makes us appreciate every single day.
JP De Villiers is a South African personal development guru on a mission to change the world for the better. In person, he’s ebullient and ultra positive, and you’d never know what his life looked like before he took ownership of it at the age of 23.
We caught up with the inspiring entrepreneur to discover how he did it.
What’s your story?
I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, where I encountered bullying and abuse, and very sadly, my father taking his own life. We moved around a lot, with multiple schools, making it hard to settle anywhere with no security, safety, or certainty.
As I had experienced the low of the lows, I became obsessed with how to create the high of the highs. However, despite my best intentions I realized I didn’t have the skills yet to do this.
So I set out to learn these skills. At first it was for me, and then after two years I had transformed my life entirely.
Then people started asking me how I did it, and I realized I could help people reach their own potential for a living, and I would love doing it. I could help others go from surviving to thriving.
I started off as a personal trainer, where I achieved success, until I became obsessed with the psychology of change, and moved into a more complete life transformation. I wrote a few books, spoke at a few conferences, and today I am blessed to be able to travel the world, standing on some of the biggest stages, helping people achieve their own perfect life.

WHAT IS THE TOUGHEST ADVERSITY YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR JOURNEY TO LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THIS?
In my late teens and early twenties I was so obsessed with chasing the highest highs that I lost sight of everything, and became a hedonist – completely consumed by consumption. Drugs, alcohol, late nights, girls, everything.
When I was 23, I was DJing at a new year’s eve party, surrounded by lights, hangers on and glamour, when I realized I had never been so low. I realized then it was ten years since my father took his own life, and I made a commitment to myself in that moment to change everything.
I realized that nothing was my fault when I was a child, but the minute I became an adult everything was my choice.
I made a choice to fly to the UK and seek out the very best mentor I could, and become an expert in personal development – starting with my own.
My coach told me to focus on three things:
- Find something I love doing. This was easy for me, as sports were such a big part of my life.
- Find a role model. I chose Tony Robbins as mine.
- Change your thoughts – your thoughts become your reality, so change them to positive and focused thoughts and see the benefit.
I committed to these, and this got me on the highway to living my best life.
WHAT’S YOUR GOAL FOR THE NEXT CHAPTER?
My goal is to create a global coaching platform and influence, and through my own actions go out and inspire people to go and live their own perfect life. I do this by continuing to be an athlete, pushing myself every day to become the very best version of myself.
